Birthday tomorrow.
Tomorrow, it’s my 25th birthday. I don’t feel like I’ve achieved very much this year. I quit a good job and moved up North. I see my dad a lot now which is cool.
But ya know, my cat is happy, and that is the main thing.
The economy is so shit. It is REALLY hard not to get down when, despite having 5 A Levels, a degree from the top art school in the Uk and having ALWAYS worked, you can’t seem to get anything other than “school leavers” suitable jobs.
BUT I think, well I hope, things should turn around soon. I’ve made the decision to leave my little bedsit and shop job in Manchester and move back to Morecambe for a while. Last time I was there, there was a real “renaissance” vibe going about. Vintage shops popping up, independent boutiques, cabaret shows…hell it’s even been reported that British Fashion Week is holding it’s trade show there next year… so I think I might be getting in on a good thing. And just like London has it’s seaside retreat an hour away in the shape of Brighton, I think it is about time, Morecambe became Manchester’s answer to that.
So I’m going to make this happen. The more you get rejected and the more shitty jobs you do which numb the mind, the more you feel you have to fight to get your creativity out there. I’m fed up of working for other people who can’t see my potential, so I’m going to do it for myself instead.
I’m going to start my own label. Fashion, false nails, prints. Lots of cool stuff. Hopefully sell it online first, then maybe get in on some of the markets here and then who knows! My dad has a studio, so it’s going to be really easy to keep motivated having that on my doorstep. I’ve also got a sort of trashy cabaret-cross-club night planned with my friend who is moving back to Lancs. More on that soon.
I think this genuinely is the only option for me, but I’m feeling really happy and positive about it. I’ll try get a job in Topshop, Newlook or Rivers to keep the finances coming in whilst I’m at it, which will be, ya know, ok!
So my wish list of things to happen in my 25th year:
- Start selling stuff online - hopefully move onto a market stall.
- Also start my separate line with my friend Greig.
- Get the night up and running with PK
- Get a decent enough part-time/full time job to do on the side.
- Run a new joint blog with video content with my friend Kate, who is based in Brighton, which plays on the idea of the north-south seaside divide!
- Be HAPPY.
THEN HERE’S THE BIG THING I’VE NOT MENTIONED YET: - BUY A HOUSE….GET A LODGER.
